H1N1 FLU INFORMATION

H1N1 Q & A  Flu Fact Sheet Video Message - Macomb County Health Dept. (wmv)

H1N1/Swine Flu Update
CVS is committed to the health and safety of our students.  With the beginning of the school year, we know parents are thinking beyond classes and school supplies and into the flu season, especially H1N1 or Swine Flu.

In the meantime, if you have specific questions or concerns, please contact your family physician or the Macomb County Health Department at 586.466.7923 or their website at www.macombcountymi.gov/publichealth.

Parents, you can help minimize the possibility of transmitting this or any other virus by following these simple measures at home….Get enough sleep, drink plenty of water, wash hands frequently, do not share water bottles or utensils and reduce contact with people who are sick.  If you or your children are sick, please stay home.  It’s the best place to recover from any illness.

Protect your child and family from the flu this school year

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends the following guidelines.

  • Teach your children to wash their hands often with soap and water or an alcohol-based hand rub. You can set a good example by doing this yourself.
  • Teach your children not to share personal items like drinks, food or unwashed utensils, and to cover their coughs and sneezes with tissues. Covering up their coughs or sneezes using the elbow, arm or sleeve instead of the hand when a tissue is unavailable.
  • Know the signs and symptoms of the flu. Symptoms of the flu include fever (100 degrees Fahrenheit, 37.8 degrees Celsius or greater), cough, sore throat, a runny or stuffy nose, body aches, headache, and feeling very tired. Some people may also vomit or have diarrhea.
  • Keep sick children at home for at least 24 hours after they no longer have fever or do not have signs of fever, without using fever-reducing drugs.  Keeping children with a fever at home will reduce the number of people who may get infected.
  • Do not send children to school if they are sick. Any children who are determined to be sick while at school will be sent home.

What is CVS doing to prevent the spread of the H1N1 flu virus in our schools?
This fall we will be working closely with the Macomb County Health Department, the Michigan Department of Community Health, and the Michigan Department of Education to provide information and resources for our families and to monitor local flu conditions.   Educating students, staff, and parents on ways they can help prevent the spread of flu viruses will be emphasized.  Frequent cleaning and disinfecting of high touch, hard surfaces such as doorknobs, dispensers, counter tops, sink fixtures, and hand rails will be performed by our staff.   To receive district e-mail updates please sign up for MailOut by logging on to our website chippewavalleyschools.org, click on Parents, then go to MailOut.
