TESTING OUT

DAKOTA HIGH SCHOOL AND CHIPPEWA VALLEY HIGH SCHOOL

WHAT IS "TESTING OUT"?

"Testing out" provides students with the opportunity to demonstrate competence in specific high school subject areas by taking an end-of-term exam for that specific high school subject area. Michigan law requires that school's provide opportunities for students to demonstrate mastery of a high school subject area by taking an exam as part of the Flexible Learning Opportunities under the Michigan Merit Curriculum Law.

WHO SHOULD CONSIDER TESTING OUT?

A student who feels she/he has mastered the content of a specific high school subject area and would like the chance to demonstrate that knowledge by taking an end of course exam in the specific subject area.
The Chippewa Valley School district provides many opportunities for students. Students wishing move ahead in a subject area or students needing to make room on their four-year plan for more advanced courses are good candidates to consider testing out.

HOW DOES TESTING OUT WORK IN CHIPPEWA VALLEY SCHOOLS?

Dakota High School and Chippewa Valley High School share a centralized system for testing out. Most of the testing out opportunities are offered through Chippewa Valley Schools Community Education and are held at Mohegan High School 19230 Cass Ave, Clinton Twp.  The subject examinations are offered at the Community Education Building (Mohegan High School) are computer based. Some exams are conducted at the individual high schools. Testing out occurs in June at the conclusion of the school year.

WHAT SHOULD I ALSO KNOW ABOUT TESTING OUT?

  • Passing a testing out exam earns credit for the semester course.  Students do not earn a grade - test results do not impact GPA.
  • Passing is determined by a score of 78% (C+) or better.
  • It is the student's responsibility to complete and submit the Testing Out Registration form, access any curricular guides, register at Community Education (unless otherwise indicated), and show up for the scheduled test date.
  • Students may be required to demonstrate mastery through basic assessments which may include, but not limited to, portfolios, performances, papers, projects, presentations, etc.
  • Students may not test out of courses they have previously attempted or performance courses such as Band and Choir.
  • Some colleges will not accept a "tested out" credit as part of their high school course entrance requirements. It is the student’s responsibility to contact colleges/universities that they may be considering applying to in order to learn more about specific college and university admissions policies regarding “test out” credits on high school transcripts.
  • The NCAA does not accept test out credit as credit for future college-bound student athletes.
