I know that we have all been struck in different ways by the violence that occurred on the campus of MSU on Monday night. Three MSU students, all from our local area, were killed. Five others are in critical condition. And all were impacted. As are many outside of the campus. There will be a vigil tonight at MSU and at this time I ask for a moment of silence to honor and remember.

This Saturday, February 18, is Black Movie Day, an annual event that celebrates accomplishments by and seeks to support Black film. Click the link to see how you can participate. Also, in a related event from this week in history, on February 19, 1992, Boyz N The Hood director John Singleton became the first black director to be nominated for an Academy Award.

Today during all lunches, visit the table to write a note to a friend and tell them why they matter to you. Also, tomorrow is Green Day! Wear green for a chance to win a gift card! And remember to continue searching for the “you matter” poster located in the school and submit your photos on Instagram!

We often overlook the work of custodians, hall monitors, and cafeteria staff, who work hard to make Chippewa better. For Random Acts of Kindness Week, we encourage you all to help by picking up trash you see on the floor and saying "thank you" to staff you see in the halls and cafeteria!

February 12 is Abraham Lincoln's birthday. While his history with emancipation is complex, Lincoln was historically called the “Great Emancipator” and his birthday was a traditional day of celebration in Black communities in the decades following his death. Read the Emancipation Proclamation, which Lincoln considered one of his most important actions, and reflect on this pivotal moment in US history.
