As we come to the end of Women's History Month, and also celebrate baseball's opening day, it's a great time to celebrate Jackie Mitchell, the first woman in professional baseball. She was a 17-year-old who pitched for the AA Chattanooga Lookouts in an exhibition game against the New York Yankees on April 2, 1931. The first batter she faced was Babe Ruth, followed by Lou Gehrig, the deadliest hitting duo in baseball history. Mitchell struck them both out. Her performance probably played a part in baseball commissioner Kenesaw Mountain Landis banning women from the sport later that year. https://www.smithsonianmag.com/history/the-woman-who-maybe-struck-out-babe-ruth-and-lou-gehrig-4759182/

On this day in history, March 22, 1972, the Equal Rights Amendment was passed by the U.S. Senate and sent to the states for ratification. First proposed by the National Woman’s political party in 1923, the Equal Rights Amendment was to provide for the legal equality of the sexes and prohibit discrimination on the basis of sex. Hawaii was the first state to ratify what would have been the 27th Amendment, followed by some 30 other states within a year. However, it ultimately failed to achieve ratification by the a requisite 38, or three-fourths, of the states, by the deadline set by Congress. So there is still no Equal Rights Amendment. If you are wearing a hat or a hood, remove it at this time, and keep it off until 2:11. Teachers, I encourage you to emphasize this throughout the day. But why, you may ask. It's important that a school and a community have a set of rules in order to avoid chaos. A dress code is typically a part of that set of rules. You may not agree with the rules that have been chosen, but there existence helps to create a better environment. Hats and hoods are made a part of this because they tend to get between your eyes and ears and everything else that we want you to experience at school. So hats off, hoods off, and be ready to engage in learning today.

Today's Women's History Month lesson: In 1933, Frances Perkins became the first female member of a Presidential cabinet. A sociologist and Progressive reformer in New York, she served as Franklin D. Roosevelt’s Secretary of Labor until 1945.

From < https://www.history.com/topics/womens-history/famous-firsts-in-womens-history>

In related news, our Media Center has a new book, title The Cabinet, about how George Washington originally created The Cabinet during his administration. Check it out. Remember we are competing with Dakota to check out the most books this month.

Today's book recommendation comes from Ana Grubac. She recommends The Master and Margarita by Mikhail Bulgakov. Centered on the Devil’s visit to Moscow, this 1930’s novel is a satirical critic on the Soviet Union, religion, and humanity in general. This book serves as a great introduction to anyone interested in getting into Russian literature. Send me your recommendations.

In Women's History, did you know that at the first Winter Olympic Games in 1924, the only event open to women was figure skating, and that only 15 women participated in these games. Today over 1,000 women compete in the Winter Olympic Games.

Today's Reading Month recommendations are from our Media Specialist, Ms. Goosen: Everything Sad is Untrue by Danie Nayeri is the winner of the 2021 Printz Award.  The Printz award is the highest honor for young adult fiction.  Dainel is an Iranian refugee who comes to the United States and finds a way to fit in by telling his own story. Starfish by Lisa Fipps is a novel in verse and a 2022 Printz Honor Award Winner.  It is a meaningful story about how we should treat each other and finding your own self-worth.  And her favorite book of all time is Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen.  A timeless classic story of misunderstandings and definitely a romantic comedy!

Today's Reading Month recommendation is from Ann Kakstis. It is The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue by V. E. Schwab. It is about a girl who makes a deal to be immortal, but is cursed to be forgotten by everyone she meets.

Today's Women's History lesson: On August 20, 1920, the 19th amendment to the U.S. Constitution gave women the right to vote. It was first introduced to Congress in 1878 and was finally certified 42 years later in 1920.

The winner of this week’s gift card for completing a FAFSA is Anthony Merrill. Seniors keep working, the priority deadline for submitting FAFSA is May 1st. The sooner you apply, the more money available. Another name will be selected soon.

Thank you to the 17 students who submitted MAC Principal Scholarship applications. They were outstanding. Especially impressive were the service projects and leadership examples from Matthew Medina, Emily Broadbridge, Madison Stewart, Sarah Nseir, Katelyn Kraemer, and Vinisia Eilo. Of those, the application with the most outstanding essays was from Sarah Nseir. Congratulations Sarah, your application will now move forward and compete against representatives from each school in the county.

Congratulations to the Chippewa Valley Winterguard who captured a first place win in their class this past weekend.

Later today we will hold an Avoid, Deny, Defend drill.  Clinton Township Police are here to help with the drill. To begin the drill we will activate one of our blue pull stations. This will initiate an announcement to lockdown. At that point you will avoid or deny, which means evacuate or lockdown in your classroom. That decision is made based on the information that you have available to you at the time. The most likely response is to lockdown and to barricade the door, but some classrooms may have a clear exit route and choose that option. The drill will end when your classroom is unlocked and an announcement is made.

Today's Reading Month recommendation comes from Paul Hernandez: It is Crime and Punishment by Fyodor Dostoyevsky.  This novel is one of Dostoyevsky's finest pieces and depicts an eerie and mysterious insight into criminal psychology.  The reader embarks on the journey through the mind of Raskolnikov, and Dostoyevsky's brilliant diction proves why he is a literary genius and why his novel is renowned as a classic.

Our Women's History lesson is from 1869 when Wyoming’s territorial legislature declared that “every woman of the age of twenty-one years, residing in this territory, may at every election…cast her vote.” Though Congress lobbied hard against it, Wyoming’s women kept their right to vote when the territory became a state in 1890. And in 1924, the state’s voters elected the nation’s first female governor, Nellie Tayloe Ross.

I have one extra Black History Month announcement because February sometimes has one extra day: In July 1967 President Johnson established the National Advisory Commission on Civil Disorders (also known as the Kerner Commission) to investigate the causes of urban riots in the United States during the summer of 1967, and to provide recommendations to the government for the future. Their findings were released on this week in history, February 29, 1968. https://historynewsnetwork.org/article/181567

Congratulations to our Chippewa/Dakota Unified Hockey team for winning the MAC Red Championship jointly with Eisenhower. They completed the regular season with a very impressive 18-6-0 record.  Way to go guys!  The team will now be competing in Regionals which begin tomorrow at 7:35 pm at Mt. Clemens Ice Arena.  The kids love playing to a large home crowd and especially love seeing their teachers in the audience, so please come cheer them on if you can!

The application for community scholarships is now available.  Please go to the counseling website, under community scholarships, to check out what scholarships are available and fill out the application.  Or you can access the application by scanning the QR code which is located outside the counseling office and throughout the building. Reminder: CVHS English teacher and author, Mr. John Jeffire, is in the finals for Best of Detroit 2023. Voting is now taking place.  He's up against some tough competition including Mitch Albom, but your support can put him over the top.  Here is the link to vote (after filling in the top portion, scroll all the way down to the category Community & Personalities and "Author" is the first listing):    https://www.hourdetroit.com/best-of-detroit-2023-online-ballot/. But don't stop there. In the same ballot you will also find Mr. Jeffire and Mr. Pecar in the Best of Detroit Teacher category, so please vote that category as well. (The ballot will close at 11:59 p.m. on March 15.)
