I'd like to start this morning with some wisdom from author and poet Maya Angelou. She said, "My wish for you is that you continue. Continue to be who you are, to astonish a mean world with your acts of kindness. The effect you have on others’ lives is the highest expression of your own." Be persistent in the face of challenges, be true to yourself, and be kind to others.

Last week I shared the following quote from Martin Luther King Jr. said, "If a man is called to be a street sweeper, he should sweep streets even as a Michelangelo painted, or Beethoven composed music or Shakespeare wrote poetry. He should sweep streets so well that all the hosts of heaven and earth will pause to say, 'Here lived a great street sweeper who did his job well." I asked you to think about that quote related to taking pride in our school. Not trashing the place. And I still want you to do that, but I'd also like you to think about it related to yourself and your future. You may not know what you want to do or be in the future, and that is okay, but whatever it is, be great at it. And use school to prepare and practice for that greatness. Practice being your best every day.

Our Black Student Union has been sponsoring a Spirit Week this week for Black History Month. Today's theme is, Unity Day. Seniors-Red, Juniors-green, Sophomores-yellow, and Staff-black. One of my favorite terms to describe Unity is Ubuntu, an African word meaning "I am because we are." It's one word that reminds us that we are all connected and that we all depend on each other.

There is great pride in that statement. Pride in doing things well. And also pride in making the place we live, clean and nice. We could use that right now. I'm disheartened to see so much trash on the floor, left on tables, thrown in sinks, and toilets. Do all in your power to make this the best place that it can be. Let's keep our school clean.

In honor of dress like your favorite artist and Black History Month, a poem from one of my favorites, Langston Hughes:
"Dreams"
Hold fast to dreams
For if dreams die
Life is a broken-winged bird
That cannot fly.
Hold fast to dreams
For when dreams go
Life is a barren field
Frozen with snow.
